Happy you've brought up this issue. I think the problem has been here for decades, we see it worsening. Turns out extending childhood and arresting development was what the 6 goals of schooling intended, which had nothing to do with educaton. See John Taylor Gatto. The industrialist bankers lobbied for legislation for mandatory schooling 2 years after they got their income tax and federal reserve bank in 1913. The tax was to pay the interest on the government debt which they intended to massively increase. The Fed was to control and direct the creation of money and thus public policy. The mandatory schooling was to make comliant, uniform workers and obedient soldiers for the massive industrial investments they had planned.
