How Realtors Divide and Conquer
This article is written to single out the sins of the real estate industry but they like every other industry are dominated by those with the most money in their game, which is always ultimately the big banks. The real estate industry, a tentacle of the finance industry, is deserving of being singled out for its role in the 2008 mortgage crisis. Blowing mortgage bubbles is what they do, pushing prices ever upward simply because it increases their income. To put it simply it is the profit motive that is built into the psychological framework of the monetary system that drives society’s need for more.
There is a new book titled Freedom to Discriminate: How Realtors Conspired to Segregate Housing and Divide America by Gene Slater, an expose’ of the industries role in segregation and modern conservative ideology. Apparently, he obtained confidential documents from leaders of the real estate industry revealing how realtors systematically created and justified residential segregation. He writes:
“To defend all-white neighborhoods against the civil rights movement, realtors put the right to discriminate at the center of individual liberty, effectively redefining and weaponizing “freedom” and providing a roadmap for conservatives nationally.
