Patriarchy means you believe in an all powerful male God, hierarchy, one man at the top. That is most likely the only society any of us have ever known. However, societies who worshiped some form of the 'Great Mother' a female deity, were not a matriarchy but were matrifocal and egalitarian. The prosperous and innovative high middle-ages in Europe is an example.
